We went into the game hoping for points and a run of wins. I said earlier in the week a draw felt likely, but when we went 2-0 up I truly expected us to see it out. To be fair, the first half was brilliant and Chermiti's goals were outstanding. It is the second half that leaves a sour taste.
Second half: foot off the gas
After the break we let up. We sat off, gave them time on the ball and suddenly the momentum shifted. You could see tiredness creep in with a few players. Passes were slower, pressing was less intense and that allowed the opposition back into the game. It was painful to watch given the promise of the opening 45 minutes. Moments where we needed to press, we did not. Moments where we should have closed down, we gave space. It cost us.
Bench issues and squad depth
Right now I do not think our squad depth is where it needs to be. We did not have good options to change the game from the bench today, certainly not ones who have shown previously they can make a big impact. You need fresh legs and different options when tiredness sets in and the game changes shape. That is on the squad and on those picking the bench. If this season ends with dropped points like today, the summer window will be a big one for building the kind of depth we need.
League picture and what comes next
It is simple now. Every game is a must win. Hearts are sitting pretty at the top and Motherwell are doing well. Celtic have a game in hand and could move ahead, so there is no room for complacency. Time will tell if we can grind this out, but the truth is the second half approach and a lack of impact from the bench made this a tough one to take. To be honest, you can see why people are worried.
