The result was there, but it didn’t feel like the kind of Rangers performance that puts anyone at ease. A narrow win can be fine, even in this league, but when it’s ugly for long spells and the chances are sparse, you end up thinking about what happens the next time the pressure’s properly on.
That’s the worry for a lot of us just now. In too many league and cup games this season we’ve looked flat and toothless, like we’re having the ball without really hurting anyone. Possession is only useful if it leads to clear chances, and too often it feels slow, predictable, and easy to set up against.
Why the forward line isn’t deciding games
This squad has brought in forwards and creative players to score and assist regularly. That’s the job. And if a winger or attacker isn’t producing goals, assists, or at least constant threat, it’s fair to question whether they’re the right fit for Rangers.
From my point of view, Gassama and Antman haven’t delivered enough since arriving. The same goes for others who should be making us sharper in the final third. Raskin, too, has looked well off it for whatever reason, and when your midfield isn’t driving you up the pitch, everything becomes laboured.
Even the signings that looked promising on paper aren’t matching the expectation. Miovski hasn’t kicked on the way I hoped, and I still don’t understand how Chermiti ended up being viewed as an £8 million answer if the output isn’t there. That’s not about scapegoating, it’s about standards. Rangers need difference-makers, not passengers.
The big games tell you the truth
The part that really stings is how it keeps showing up when it matters most. Take Hearts as an example. In those games, when you need someone to grab it by the scruff of the neck, too many go missing. We fade, we get quiet, and we look like we’re waiting on the match to happen to us.
It’s not just about one player having an off day either. It feels like a wider issue with personality and tempo. When the opposition raise it, we don’t always go with them.
Leadership, the spine, and the next windows
You can start with Butland and look straight through the spine: we haven’t been good enough defensively, we’ve not controlled midfield consistently, and the strikers aren’t scoring often enough. Out wide, the creativity and end product still aren’t reliable. For me, it all points back to poor recruitment in the summer.
That’s why I give Danny Röhl credit for getting more points with the hand he’s been dealt. But we’re staring at two massive windows, especially if loanees move on and we need a proper rebuild at the back plus more invention up front.
And leadership can’t be ignored. I don’t see enough from the captain during games, and I’ve felt for a while that a change there is overdue. A new captain, with proper standards and presence, wouldn’t fix everything on its own. But it would be a start. Because right now there are too many players drifting through matches, and Rangers can’t carry that if we want to compete from day one next season.
