There’s a proper wistful glow when you think back to those seasons. We weren’t just watching a team, we were watching characters, entertainers and proper match-winners on a regular basis. Names leap off the tongue — Davie Cooper, McCoist, a young Durrant, then Butcher, Woods, Steven's, Gough, Steven, McCall, Gazza, Laudrup, Goram, Hateley, Albertz, Numan, Van Brockhurst, DeBoer and a young Gattuso. It felt like a conveyor belt of quality. We really were blessed.

World-class nights and heroes from everywhere

And it wasn’t just club men. Who wouldn’t want to spend an afternoon watching Maradonna? Personally I always loved Roberto Carlos for that thunderbolt left foot, and Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and the real Ronaldo were joy to watch — even if that Rivaldo bit at the World Cup left a sour taste. There were other names too that stuck in the memory: Luther Matheus, Hagi, Stoichkov. Toss in international sides like that Argentina team of 86 and 90, the Dutch Euro winners of 88 and France’s 98 squad and you had a golden age of players who made every game feel special.

Why it felt different back then

Truth is the game has changed. Tactics, fitness, money — all different now. But there was a rawness before, a kind of weekly gladiatorial test where players got kicked up and down the park and still came back for more. You’d watch those battles and think the lads would simply get up and keep going. These days there’s a lot more focus on recovery and managing loads, which is obviously right, but it does make you nostalgic for the old grit and rhythm.

Would I go back?

Absolutely. Not to change results, just to take it all in properly. I’d go back with a clearer head and try to soak up every ping of the crowd, every scuffed pass and those late runs into the box. We had a run of decades that delivered endless memories — moments that still pop into your head when the lights go out. That’s worth celebrating.
