Connor Barron is one of those players who gets people talking. To be fair, there are nights when his energy is priceless — chasing, harrying, making life uncomfortable for the opposition. But the bigger question is whether that frantic energy alone is enough for the type of midfield control Rangers need right now.
What Barron brings to the table
He’s brave, he covers ground and he’s not afraid to scrap for possession. Those traits matter. You can see why fans appreciate the graft; it often helps close down lanes and break up play. Stats the poster shared show a mixed bag: 19 appearances and 13 starts this season in the SPFL, with 2 assists and a clean sheet on goals for him. Ground duels won sit at 54% and the pass accuracy in the opposition half is at 85% — respectable figures that point to a player who can be effective in certain phases of the game.
Where the complaints come from
But truth is, football at this level also needs a metronome. The criticism isn’t just nitpicking — it’s about control. The fan rightly points out how, in stretches, we’ve been guilty of punt-forward football that hands the initiative back to opponents. Barron can lose possession (the note about an average of 7 possession losses per game is worrying) and his crossing and long-ball accuracy — 35% and 40% respectively as quoted — don’t exactly scream composure. He’s effective in a press, less so when we need to slow things down and manage the tempo.
Is he a work in progress or the wrong profile?
Under Rohl the poster notes improvement, and that’s important. Development is real. But there’s a tactical choice to make: do we prioritise legs and aggression in midfield or a calmer, more assured presence who can take the ball, hold it and pull the strings? Personally I think there’s room for both depending on the game. Barron’s a useful piece of the puzzle, but I’d like to see him add a bit more poise on the ball so he isn’t just the outlet for a rushed transition. Consistency is everything — and that’s the difference between a useful squad player and a genuine starter for the big nights.
