We gifted a goal we should have defended. A cross, a couple of men ball-watching and an easy header from the edge of the six-yard box — moments like that decide big games. It stings because it wasn't a moment of brilliance from the opposition, just poor concentration and basic defending.

Defending the box isn't glamorous, but it's compulsory

Look, nobody wants to spend the week talking about clearing headers or picking up runners, but that's where matches are won and lost. When Fernandez and Raskin both drift off or ball-watch, it leaves the keeper exposed and forces panic. Butland can see it all in front of him; yes, keepers shout and organise, but the outfield players have to act. Picking up men in the box is elementary. When we leave the simplest jobs undone, we invite trouble. It's not a single player's disaster, it's a collective lapse.

The rebound that screamed for desire

After a keeper does his bit, the team must follow. Seeing Maeda nearer to Hatate on the rebound while no Gers player is challenging tells you something about our intent. Rebounds demand aggression and anticipation — someone should be flying in, making life difficult. Instead it looked like a hesitation, a lack of urgency. You can't assume the ball won't fall kindly to the opposition; you have to go and make it uncomfortable for them.

Creativity, directness and the Olsen question

Olsen delivered the assist, but there were long spells where he chose to recycle rather than take men on. We miss that natural directness Tounetki used to offer — the willingness to run at defenders, to create chaos. Is Olsen cautious, or not quite match-fit? Hard to say, but the team needs more moments of real invention and directness in the final third. Managerial choices matter too; if we don’t nullify key opposition runners early, the game becomes harder than it needs to be, and that’s on the coaching team as much as the players.

Overall, the first-half intensity showed what we can do. The second half felt like assumption and recoil. Get the basics right — mark, react, attack the loose ball — and we avoid these self-inflicted wounds.
