We’ve pushed our line higher and tried to press teams more, and you can see why that requires different defenders. With a higher, man to man approach the centre backs need real pace and comfort stepping into space. Djiga and Fernandez look better equipped for that style, while Souttar’s strengths lie elsewhere.

Why a high line needs quick centre backs

The truth is this approach rewards teams who can recover quickly and cover the channels. Teams that press and play their defenders up invite transitions, and you need centre backs who can sprint across and deal with runners in behind. Souttar is a very good defender in his own right but his game is more about timing and reading the situation than about covering long runs. He tends to drop off rather than hold a really high line, and that makes him vulnerable if the opposition expose space behind him. That is not a criticism of his ability, more an observation of suitability to a specific system.

Do we change shape for one player?

So do we reshape the team to suit Souttar? I don’t think so. We have forwards and wide players who can hurt teams by keeping the ball higher and by stretching opponents. Reverting to a lower block to protect one profile risks losing the attacking edge that has been useful. The manager faces a selection headache instead of a formation choice; rotate, pick the quicker pairing for matches where the risk is greater, and keep Souttar for games that suit his strengths.

What the manager should consider

It’s a big call for Danny but it is manageable. Squad management and clear communication are key. Use Djiga or Fernandez when we plan to press high and need recovery pace. Keep Souttar as a reliable option when we want solidity and better aerial presence. There will be nights where choices aren’t ideal, that is football.

Ultimately it comes down to balance, and honestly I’d rather see us pick the system that gives us the best chance to win, even if that means difficult calls for familiar faces. It is never pleasant to see players drop out through tactical necessity, but that is the reality of competing on multiple fronts. Rotation does not equal lack of faith. It is about matching personnel to plan. If Danny gets the balance right we still have the tools to press hard and cause problems, while keeping defensive stability.
