There’s a habit among some supporters of applauding managers who do well on a tight budget and then insisting we should parachute them into Ibrox. It sounds tidy until you remember the other side of the coin: lower budgets come with lower expectations. JBA has earned his praise, but that doesn’t automatically mean replacing what we’ve got is sensible.
Budget versus expectation
Yes, doing a lot with very little is impressive. Fans love the romantic line about a manager getting the best out of scraps. Trouble is, people forget that doing well on limited means usually means winning fewer games, facing different pressure, and being judged against a different bar. McGlynn at Falkirk has done brilliant work with a young side and a smaller budget, and you can see why that draws admiration. But admiration is not the same as saying he should step into a club with vastly higher expectations and different demands.
Pre-season and coaching time matter
Another point that gets missed in the heat of a transfer-season argument is the simple fact of coaching time. JBA had the benefit of a full pre-season with his squad, which allows ideas to be embedded and for patterns to form. Rohl, by contrast, has operated under tighter schedules with only a day between matches at times. That matters. It affects training load, how systems settle, and how quickly players adapt. It is not a small detail and it shouldn’t be waved away when people start demanding change.
Patience beats the microwave mentality
I’m not saying there aren’t legitimate critiques. We all want progress, and we’re rightly impatient for trophies and stability. But throwing away a season’s work to chase a different manager because he’s done well elsewhere is rash. Football fans have become used to instant fixes. The truth is real progress often needs patience, consistent coaching and a little faith in the process. Call me old-fashioned, but I’d rather see us back the plan we’ve started than rip it up because someone else looks fashionable right now.
