Chermiti can produce moments of quality, true enough, but at Rangers moments don’t win you titles. We need a striker who gives you that reliable movement and finishing night in, night out — and right now I don’t think Chermiti is that man.
Flashes don't cut it
There’s a difference between being exciting and being dependable. You can see why fans get carried away when a player bursts into life for a few minutes, but the truth is those flashes don’t add up if they’re rare. Consistency is what separates a squad player from a proper number nine. I backed Dessers to the hilt here, and I stand by that: across the spells he’s played he’s done more for the side than some of the options we’ve had. That doesn’t mean he’s perfect, but it does underline the point — rhythm and reliability matter.
Wingers must deliver into danger
It’s not just about the centre-forward. Our wide players have to feed the danger area more often and pick their moments to cross or pull back. Good wingers vary their delivery: low, hard cut-backs, whipped balls to the near post, and diagonal switches can all unsettle defenders. When service is better, a striker with the right movement can punish it. That’s one of the reasons people talk about positioning — good strikers find pockets between defenders and time their runs to perfection.
Where Chermiti needs to improve
Movement, timing and consistency. Chermiti has improved in places, but he doesn’t show the constant positional intelligence you want from your number one. He needs to occupy correct channels, read cues from the wingers and midfield, and be the kind of player who drags defenders out of position regularly. Prolific? That comes from workrate off the ball as much as composure on it.
To be fair, we should encourage improvement — he’s shown glimpses — but Rangers demand more than glimpses. If he can turn those flashes into regular contributions, fine. Until then, I don’t see him as a nailed-on first choice.
