Archer arrived with the sort of hype that makes folk talk about ‘the next big English wonderkid’. To be fair, that kind of billing sets expectations that are hard to meet. The honest take is that his career has stalled a bit, but finishing ability remains a decent asset. He’s not exactly a pure number nine, and you can argue Danilo isn’t either. What matters is how he fits into Danny’s shape and whether he can grow here.

Where Archer really sits

You’ll hear people say teams wouldn’t pay certain fees or that English clubs pay over the odds for homegrown prospects. That’s how the market works. Regardless of price talk, we must judge the player on what he offers on the pitch. Archer can finish, sure. But being able to hit the net doesn’t automatically make someone a natural goalscorer who will deliver week in, week out. He’s a youngster still finding consistency and identity. If he arrives, don’t expect miracles straight away. Expect effort, raw moments and the odd frustration. That’s the reality with many young forwards.

The Motherwell question

About the Motherwell player people mention, I’ve got mates who support the Steelmen and a lot of them think he might want to move back south. Fair enough. Plenty of players do well at M’well and it doesn’t always translate to instant success at Rangers. We’ve seen that before. It can go the other way as well, of course. Form, confidence and the pressure of Ibrox are different animals. So take the praise at face value but keep expectations measured.

Give him a chance — then judge

I’m a sceptic about raiding the lower leagues in England without clear evidence, but I also believe in giving lads a fair crack. If Danny wants Archer, let’s back the manager and see what the lad can do in our system. Young players need time and the right environment. And while we’re discussing signings, the simple, immediate priority is the pitch: three points today. We don’t want Hearts stretching the cushion. One game at a time, and let’s judge new arrivals by performances, not headlines.
