There’s a tendency in football to reduce someone down to one decision and forget everything else. MPH gets a lot of stick because of the Martin appointment, and folk overlook other moves that have mattered. To be fair, a few of those calls are starting to look less daft than they were made out to be.
Gassama – flashes, not a miracle
I’d add Gassama to the list of positives, even if it’s only partial. In his first season at a big club in a different country he’s shown a few proper flashes of quality. You can see what he might become given time and a settled environment. That’s not to pretend he’s nailed it already, but the potential is there and deserves acknowledgement.
Windy, Everton and context
On Windy, as I understand it he wasn’t being renewed at Everton because Moyes was coming back. That’s how it was explained around the time, and it’s worth noting context before assuming anything else. Managers and directors often make choices based on relationships and stability, not just form.
Thelwell — steadying hands?
Thelwell gets a mention here because he’s been reported as doing well at Everton: guiding them through a difficult financial patch, stabilising the squad and turning around their transfer position. Whether you take that at face value or with a pinch of salt, the skillset he brings — particularly his academy background — is useful. Academy experience isn’t glamorous, but it helps build a structure that lasts beyond quick fixes.
People are entitled to be sceptical. I’m not trying to pretend everything’s rosy. But we should at least recognise the bits that look sensible. Decisions in football are rarely black and white. Sometimes the quieter, structural moves are the ones that pay off in time.
