Three goals, a clean-ish night for the attack and a bit of confidence back in the legs. On the face of it, that was a decent result and exactly what the players needed.
The finishing for the three goals was tidy and you could see the lift it gave the team. That sort of clinical edge has been missing too often, so it was good to see us actually punishing a poor side for once instead of letting them hang about.
Miovski shines but defence still worries
Miovski looked really good. You could tell he was up for it, his movement was sharp and he took his chances well. It was one of those nights where everything just seemed to click for him and you could see the confidence growing as the game went on.
But even with all that, the same old defensive frailties were there for everyone to see. The shape without the ball still doesn’t convince, we switch off too easily and there are moments where you’re just waiting on someone making the wrong decision. That has to be sorted, because better sides will punish it every single time.
Perspective needed on Barron’s performance
Wee Barron was a standout on the night, no arguing with that. He used the ball well, showed for it and looked a level above a few around him. But, and it’s a big but, doing that against one of the worst teams in the league is very different from doing it against Celtic, Hearts or in Europe.
Performances like that against Kilmarnock or Livingston should really be bread and butter for a player of his ability if he wants to be a main man at Rangers. Right now, it still feels like he’s more suited to being a back-up option than a guaranteed starter. Until we bring in better quality in that area, though, he’ll probably keep getting the nod.
Diomonde: talent, temperament and a big question mark
Then there’s Diomonde. For a lot of fans, he’s bang average so far and hasn’t come close to justifying the fee paid. It’s not only about what he does on the ball, either. There’s a feeling he’s a walking red card at times.
He was lucky with the pullback, and that running battle with their captain could easily have boiled over if the referee had been a bit stricter. That sort of thing puts the whole team at risk when there’s no need for it. It looks like an attitude issue as much as anything else, and that’s something that needs managed quickly.
So yes, enjoy the result and the goals. But let’s not kid ourselves on. Beating a really poor Kilmarnock side doesn’t prove much. The bigger tests are still to come, and that’s when we’ll find out who’s genuinely good enough to take this team where it needs to go.
