Fernandez has become more than a centre-back who chips in with the odd goal. To me he’s worth about 15 million euros right now, and that could jump if we land trophies. I’d keep him for at least another season — continuity matters more than quick profits.
Why his goal threat matters
We don’t often get defenders who genuinely change games in the box. Fernandez gives us an extra attacking dimension from set pieces and late runs, and that’s priceless in tight Scottish games. You can coach defensive shape and buy blocking centre-halves, but that instinct in the opposition box? That’s rarer.
Call it opportunism if you like, but goals win matches and trophies. If he keeps producing crucial moments then his market value will naturally rise — the 20 million euros figure after a league and cup double doesn’t sound daft at all.
Bassey and Fernandez — different beasts
They’re not the same player, and comparing them as equals misses the point. Bassey is the more complete, out-and-out defender; Fernandez offers less raw defensive dominance but more attacking bang. We need both kinds of profile in the squad, and it’s not a case of one or the other.
Questions over who is 'better' are fine, but the smart move is to recognise what each player brings and keep a balance rather than flipping players for short-term gains.
The managerial bit — and why patience pays
I thought it was criminal that Fernandez was overlooked early on. The 3.5 million we paid felt like a bargain from day one, and it was maddening to see him sat on the bench or omitted from European squads when he could’ve helped. Danny Rohl deserves credit for spotting what others missed and giving him a proper run.
Too often we sell the wrong players or ship out talent before it matures. Sustained success comes from retaining core performers, not selling them the minute their value ticks up. We’re not skint — so let’s be sensible. Keep Fernandez, back him for another season, and see what he can help us win.
