The January window has given supporters a lift, but let’s be honest: expectation and reality don’t always move at the same pace. It’s easy to get carried away when new signings look promising and Celtic are not at their best, but patience will still be needed.

Why the window feels important

To be fair, this window does feel like one of the better ones we’ve seen recently. Fresh faces bring optimism and they’ve nudged the squad forward. That naturally raises hopes — rightly so in some respects — but expectation can stretch beyond what a squad of young, developing players can deliver straight away.

Young squad, messy roads

We aren’t the finished article. A lot of the lads are young and learning on the job. That means inconsistency. One week we look fluent and dangerous, the next we’re a bit ragged. That’s normal. The truth is experience is being gained every week and that will pay off, maybe not fully this season, but definitely down the line.

Playing style and the bumpy process

One of the big shifts I’ve noticed is a more expansive approach. There are more bodies arriving in the box than earlier in the season and the team looks to take the game on more. I don’t think we win the title without that evolution, yet it’s a bumpy process. Our floor has probably dipped at times while our ceiling has risen — growing pains, basically.

Those changes won’t instantly iron out, and the full benefits might only be obvious next season when the young players have another year under their belts and the system is more settled.

Ultimately, I’m encouraged. The owners seem intent on improving the squad and you can feel a new era taking shape. Celtic look a long way off their relentless best from a couple of seasons back. That doesn’t mean we can relax — far from it — but it does mean there’s reason to be quietly excited about what’s coming.
