Drink-driving is madness. There’s no grey area on that, and anyone who gets behind the wheel after drinking deserves to be punished. But it’s also possible to hold that line while admitting some of the online reaction has been way over the top.

Charged doesn’t mean we know every detail

A lot of folk seem to be waiting on Police Scotland “confirming” every last bit of it, as if they’re going to run a running commentary for social media. That’s not how it works. There are legal processes, privacy rules, and a court system for a reason.

If someone has been charged, you can safely assume there’s a basis for that charge. That doesn’t mean every rumour, screenshot, or whispered version of the night is suddenly gospel. It just means this has moved beyond pure hearsay and into a formal process where evidence matters.

Tabloids, leaks and the circus

Truth is, leaks will appear. The red tops will run with whatever they can get, and some of it will be accurate while some of it will be padded out for drama. Dismissing everything as “haters” is daft, but swallowing everything whole isn’t clever either.

Supporters need to be careful with certainty. It’s easy to get caught in a loop where you either defend the player at all costs or sentence him on the spot. Neither helps Rangers, and neither helps the standards we say we want from the club.

Responsibility stays the same

One thing that keeps getting floated is how far over the limit someone might have been, or whether mixed drinks could play a part. But even that line of chat can start sounding like excuses, and that’s a slippery road. If you drink, don’t drive. Simple.

Whatever the eventual details are, the principle doesn’t change. If it’s proven, there should be consequences from the courts, and there should be consequences from Rangers as well. That’s part of being a professional and part of representing the badge.

And then, when the process is done, the club and the support move on. Not by brushing it under the carpet, but by dealing with it properly, learning from it, and getting back to football.
