After letting yesterday's result sit with me for a bit, three things stand out more clearly now: our lack of leaders on the pitch, worrying moments from the back despite signs of improvement, and the timing of the manager's changes. Not moaning for the sake of it — just being honest about why we keep letting leads slip.
Leadership left wanting
Everyone says it and for good reason: you can see when a side has an obvious calming presence. We still look a touch fragile when pressure comes. Players hurry passes, look around for reassurance, and small moments turn into bigger problems. A defensive mid or a senior defender who takes control, speaks up and steadies the team would make a real difference. It isn't about naming one man, it's about finding that voice on the pitch who keeps everyone level-headed when the heat is on.
Defence: signs of promise but concentration concerns
To be fair, Manny Fernandez has shown improvement and there are encouraging bits in our play. But there are lapses that give you that nervous feeling. Slip-ups in concentration, sloppy reactions at key moments, and an overall unwillingness to make the simple, calming decisions under pressure — that's what costs you. The defence as a unit must tighten up, focus for the full 90, and stop gifting momentum back to opponents. Clean, composed defending is as much mental as it is technical.
Subs and game management
Danny deserves credit for much this season, but yesterday the substitutes from the other side shifted the balance and it felt like we waited too long to respond. The first goal felt avoidable in that sense — an inevitability creeping in because momentum changed and we didn't react quickly enough. Trying to hang on to a one-goal lead without shoring things up is risky. Game management is about timing: when to freshen legs, when to change shape, and when to put the brake on. We could have been smarter.
Look, I'm not calling for heads to roll. This is two league games where we left points on the table and that stings. But there's a chance to put things right this weekend. If we show a bit more leadership on the park, clamp down at the back, and make crisper tactical decisions from the dugout, we'll be in a much better place.
