Fair do's — tribunals and market prices aren't the same thing. If King is surplus to requirements at Ibrox, we shouldn't pretend we're still chasing the kind of fee we once paid. Better to let the lad go and get him off the books.

Tribunal versus a club happy to move a player on

Tribunals exist to settle disputes about an asset's value when both sides are arguing their case. Aberdeen or Dundee going to tribunal is a different kettle of fish to Rangers saying: "He's not for us any more." When you're trying to move someone on, the aim is different. You're not defending an asset; you're clearing room.

What buyers will realistically pay

Truth is, Scottish clubs don't have limitless pockets. A player who hasn't really kicked on will naturally command a modest fee. Holding out for half a million for someone who hasn't proved himself is just wishful thinking. We paid more for him years ago, sure — but past transfer fees don't magically force buyers to match them now.

Let the lad find his level

So let him go. Give the lad a run somewhere he'll get minutes and see what happens. No need for bitterness. We move players on, he gets a chance, and Rangers tidy the squad and the wage bill. Simple football common sense. Wish him well, and let's focus on the players who actually figure in the manager's plans.
