I don’t really want to have a go at young lads trying to learn the game, because that’s not what this is. If they were Rangers players, you could live with the ups and downs. You’d even embrace it, because you can see the bigger picture. The frustration comes when they’re not ours, and we’re still asking them to carry a position for months at a time.
“Good signing” or just the only option?
There’s a line that gets used a lot: a player’s been a “good signing” because he’s all we’ve got. That’s not really praise, is it? That’s survival. And Rangers shouldn’t be operating in survival mode when it comes to basic squad building.
I don’t blame any of the players for taking the chance in front of them. If you’re thrown in, you try your best. But going into a season with a 19-year-old who’s barely had senior football, then acting surprised when it’s a bumpy ride, is on the people making the calls.
The left-back situation wasn’t fair on anyone
Take the left-back debate. Money spent on two short-term options could have gone towards bringing in a better long-term solution than Meghoma, or at least something that actually fits what Rangers need week to week. That’s not saying Meghoma’s a bad player, far from it. To be fair to him, he’s had to stand up and be counted. No hiding place, no easing-in period. Just straight into it.
And you can see there’s a talent there. He’s clearly got tools and he could go a long way in the game. But the point is about fit, timing, and what Rangers get back at the end of it. If he develops, someone else benefits.
Why experience matters, even in young signings
That’s why the Rommens comparison sticks. Not saying he’ll definitely be a star, but he looks like a talented young player who’s already got a decent level of experience behind him. That matters. Young players will still have off days, but at least you’re not building the whole position around hope and learning-on-the-job.
The real argument isn’t personal. It’s about what Rangers gain. If we’d signed someone like Rommens earlier and skipped the two loanees, I genuinely don’t think our season would be any worse. And we might have had two of our own players picking up those minutes and that valuable experience instead. That’s how you build a squad, not just patch it.
