Let's be upfront: this isn't the most convincing Rangers side we've seen. There's been chaos across the club these last couple of seasons — five managers and a raft of directors is no way to build consistent success. Still, form matters and right now Danny Rohl has given the team something we badly needed: solidity. That shift might not win style awards, but it has brought results, and that's worth acknowledging.
The big picture matters. Hearts last won the league in 1960, and no club outside the Old Firm has taken the title in almost half a century. If Hearts manage it this time, fair play to them — it would be a genuine achievement. Personally, I still view that as a rarity rather than a mark that suddenly elevates their season in the long view of Scottish football.
What Rohl has done so far is tidy the defence and make us hard to beat. You can see the change in shape and discipline: the team presses when needed, looks compact out of possession and gives the keeper fewer shocks. It's the pragmatic approach most would choose given the wreckage before he arrived. Pragmatism wins points. Pragmatism can win leagues.
That said, we are a work in progress going forward. Rohl is nudging us toward more expansive play and you can see him trying to encourage tempo, forward runs and better transitions. It isn't fully there yet — the passing can be hesitant and the forward third messy — but the intent is clear. Young players need time, and so does a system that asks more of them than simply sitting deep and blocking lanes.
Comparison is inevitable. Looking at Hearts and Celtic, I like where we sit. On paper we've got the squad to cope with the grind, and as a fan I'm quietly bullish. Does that guarantee anything? Of course not. We won't win every week. But if Rohl keeps the defence organised and the players pick up the attacking rhythm he wants, we'll pick up enough points to stay in the fight.
Truth is, I'd rather be in our position than the alternative — hopeful, steadying, and sensible. Give the manager time, and let's see how the football grows. Rangers News Views aside, this season feels like one where patience and pragmatism could pay off.
