I was born in 1980 and, hand on heart, this is about the worst Rangers side I've watched, other than the years we were sent down the leagues. That’s not said lightly. It comes from watching decades of teams who, good or bad, at least understood what the jersey demanded.

Pressure, expectation and the reality of booing

Booing at football has been around since the game started and it is never going away. You can like it or hate it, but it’s part of the sport. Players grow up dreaming of reaching a club like Rangers, with huge pressure and massive expectation. That’s the trade-off. The size of the club, the noise, the demands.

If they can’t handle that and thrive in it, they probably shouldn’t be here. It really is that simple. You don’t get to enjoy the prestige of playing for Rangers then complain that the crowd expects more than light jogging and sideways passes.

We helped carry this club to a European final

It wasn’t that long ago the support played a massive part in the team reaching a European final. The players were talking about the atmosphere, pundits were talking about it, and everyone could see how much the crowd helped drive that side on.

So why weren’t Rangers fans a problem then? Funny how the support gets praised when things are going well, but when the performances dip, suddenly the fans are the issue. Give us something to cheer about and we respond. When the team shows heart, aggression, and a bit of quality, Ibrox becomes one of the best places in the world to play.

Jogging back and getting praised for nothing

The problem just now is effort and standards. You see it with your own eyes. Commentators mention it all the time. You look up the park and see four or five players just lightly jogging back when we’re under pressure. That’s not unlucky. That’s not "needing confidence". That’s a mindset problem.

And people want us to cheer that? That’s how kids end up spoiled, by getting constant praise for nothing. We’re being told to do the same for fully grown men earning serious money every week. Clap every half-hearted press. Applaud every lazy recovery run. Pretend everything is fine while teams stroll through us.

Supporters will never accept low standards

I’d genuinely love to see some of the folk who blame the fans standing there applauding every bad pass, every soft goal we give away. Because that’s what they’re asking us to do.

We aren’t the problem. The issue is ability, work rate and mentality on the park. Rangers supporters will always demand more, and rightly so. When the players hit that level, the Ibrox crowd usually goes with them. Until then, don’t point the finger at the stands for refusing to celebrate mediocrity.
