I’m not saying the current crop are tearing it up for Rangers right now, but it’s clear enough that proper football people see players there. The question is whether we finally give a coach the time and structure to bring that out, instead of going for yet another reset.
There is clearly talent in this group
You only need to look at how some of them are viewed elsewhere. The Sweden manager clearly sees a player in Aasgaard. Portugal under-21s see a player in Chermiti. That doesn’t just happen by accident. These are national coaches and scouts at a serious level deciding these boys have something about them.
On top of that, we’ve heard that during Koppens’ time the scouting brief had eyes on lads like Djiga, Antman and Gassama before they ended up moving to other clubs. We didn’t get them in early enough, and they slipped away. Then you’ve got Miovski, who has already shown he can score in the SPFL, and players like Cornelius, Miller and Meghoma who have all shown promise in spells.
So when people act as if there is no quality in or around the squad, it just doesn’t stack up. There is ability there. The issue is what we do with it.
Give a coach time to build, not just clear out
What we really need is a coach who can pull that ability together and shape it into a proper team. Someone who can blend the younger lads with a few more experienced heads to lift the level, add a bit of calm and know-how, and give them guidance on the pitch.
The ideal model is fairly simple: you add two or three proper upgrades or smart additions each season, replace the ones who are sold or don’t quite make the grade, and keep a clear core. That way the squad evolves instead of being ripped up every window.
But at Rangers there’s always that pressure for instant success. We want it done quickly to keep the support onside, and you can see why. The problem is when that turns into panic.
The failed cycle of bulk buying
We can’t just keep doing what we’ve done far too often: buy players in bulk, throw 8–10 new faces at the squad, and if it doesn’t click straight away, decide after six months they’re not good enough and start again. That constant rebuild hasn’t worked. It hasn’t given us consistent success and it definitely hasn’t helped players settle or improve.
So the real decision is simple enough but hard to stick to: do we keep chasing that instant fix with another massive squad overhaul, or do we finally back a proper structure, trust the scouting, and let a manager coach this group with targeted additions each year?
Because at some point we need to stop acting surprised when ripping everything up every summer leads to the same outcome. There is a different way. It just needs a bit of patience and a lot more conviction.
