I’m fully on board with the idea Rangers can improve the squad by shopping within our own league. Not every signing needs to be a big-name punt from abroad. Sometimes you just need players who already know the tempo, the pitches, the winter schedule, and what it feels like turning up at Ibrox with expectations through the roof.

The truth is, SPFL recruitment is rarely glamorous, but it can be smart. It can also be quick. You’re not spending half a season bedding someone in, hoping they adjust. You’re bringing in lads who understand the chaos of Scottish football and can contribute from day one, even if it’s initially as depth.

Fixing the spine first: keeper and centre of the park

Starting at the back, I’d take Sinisalo at Hibs. For me he’s ahead of Wright and Kelly and gives you a more reliable option in the goalkeeping group. That’s not about being flashy, it’s about cutting down the moments that make the crowd nervous.

In midfield, Sevelj at Dundee United is the kind of signing I’d make if we’re serious about improving the base of the team. I think he’d start. And for a more all-round central midfielder, I’d rather have Watson at Kilmarnock than Diomande. It’s not even about writing anyone off, it’s about getting the blend right for Scotland: legs, duels, and a bit of control when the game turns scrappy.

Full-back depth and sensible cover at centre-half

Left-back is the obvious one. If we don’t actually have a proper left-back nailed down, then Montgomery at Livingston feels like an easy “improves the depth” move. You need someone who can do the basics well, defend their back post, and still get up the park when the game opens up.

On the other side, Adams at Falkirk stands out. I genuinely think he could start for us, and that’s saying something because it’s not a position you want to churn every window. At centre-half, Milne at Aberdeen feels like a better back-up option behind Souttar than Djiga or Fernandez. You need a defender you trust when the schedule gets busy, not someone you’re holding your breath with every time there’s a diagonal into the channel.

Young talent, wide options, and a striker for Röhl’s style

Molotnikov at Hibs is only 18 and looks like the sort of player Scotland tends to lose sooner rather than later. If you can get him in early and actually give him minutes, you might have something. I’d have him playing before Thelo and Bajrami, because you can see the upside and the ceiling.

Out wide, Keskinen at Aberdeen is better than Matondo in my view, and he’d push Gassama for a starting spot. Mooney at St Mirren feels like one of those depth signings that matters across a season, especially if he’s coming in as cover behind Antman.

And up top, Wilson at Hearts is the big one. I think he’d be a star in our side, and he sounds like he’d suit the style Danny Röhl wants to implement. Pressing, running channels, giving you an out-ball when you need to go direct. That’s the kind of forward who can change how the whole team functions.

There’s a lot of good talent in this league. Rangers just need to be brave enough to take it, and smart enough to pick the right ones.
