There’s a simple frustration here: we started the game well and then drifted. You could see legs going, the tempo dropping, yet the changes never came. That’s on Rohl — managers have to read the room and act. Not doing so when the team is visibly tiring is a worrying pattern.
Selection and the players he backed
Let’s be blunt about the picks. A number of the players in the side are ones Rohl has brought in or pushed for, and the jury’s mixed. Rommens gets a nod for effort; the rest leave questions. Souttar’s commitment is obvious, but timing and concentration in certain moments have cost us. Saying he ‘‘tries’’ isn’t the same as saying he’s getting it right in key situations — especially when the ball is in the air.
Subs, impact and the lack of spark
We didn’t see enough change from the bench. Subs are the tools to change tempo, protect leads and freshen tired legs. When they’re held back, the game drifts and the opposition smells blood. Chucky looks tidy on the ball but hasn’t given the decisive influence you want; Naderi’s pedigree doesn’t automatically translate to dominance here. Olsen? I’m not convinced what he brings on a consistent basis.
Defending leads and finishing the job
This is the sticking point. We often settle into a line that invites pressure and then scramble. It’s not new. It’s something Rohl needs to fix with better in-game management and clearer instructions about shape and tempo. We’re still in the title race and that’s no small thing — but if we’re aiming to be within a couple of points at the split, the manager must show he can stop games slipping away.
To be fair, the first half showed what this squad can do. Trouble is, football isn’t played in thirty-minute bursts. It’s about seeing the second half coming and doing something about it. Rohl has time, but not forever. We need sharper decisions, braver substitutions and more consistency from the players he’s asked to trust.
