There are some stories you hear in Scottish football that you don’t even want to entertain, never mind believe. Alfredo Morelos linked with Celtic is one of them. I’m not saying it’s happening, and the original shout here is basically “I can’t ever see this happening” as well, but the very idea is enough to make most Rangers fans feel a bit sick.

Why this one hits a nerve

Morelos wasn’t just any player for Rangers. For a long spell he was the centre of everything, the lad that could win you a game in a moment, or drag the whole place into chaos the next. He was box office, for better and worse, and that’s exactly why the thought of him lining up in green and white feels so wrong.

Old Firm moves are rare for obvious reasons, but it’s not just “he played for us”. It’s the image of it. The same player you’ve celebrated at Ibrox, the same name you’ve defended in arguments, suddenly wearing the other kit. That’s the bit folk can’t stomach. You don’t need it to be true for it to wind you up.

The rumour itself: treat carefully

The claim doing the rounds here is that a “usually reliable source” heard it via the company of a prominent former Rangers player: Celtic boss wilfried nancy has apparently made enquiries about signing Morelos, with a verbal offer of around £3million being knocked back by Santos, who supposedly want nearer £5million.

That’s the full shape of it. No paperwork, no official bid confirmed, no public statements. Just a bit of information passed along. And that’s important, because this is exactly the kind of story that grows legs in Glasgow even when it’s got nothing solid underneath it.

Supporters are right to be wary. Rumours, “prominent ex-player” whispers, numbers thrown into the air. It can all be true, or it can be nonsense, or it can be one enquiry that never goes anywhere.

If it did happen, the fallout would be brutal

Even talking hypothetically, you can see the reaction. Rangers fans wouldn’t just be disappointed, they’d be raging. And Celtic fans would absolutely lap it up. That’s the reality of the rivalry: it’s not just points, it’s symbols.

Truth is, some players are remembered fondly, some are remembered with mixed feelings, but most still feel like “ours” when you look back. Morelos is in that category for a lot of people. So if you’re reading this and thinking “surely not”… aye, that’s the natural response. Let’s hope it stays that way.
