People can dress it up as “just opinions” all they want, but there are a few things about Rangers right now that feel pretty hard to argue with. Yes, you can point to better numbers and a general uptick under Danny Röhl, but it doesn’t wipe away the bigger issue: the squad is a mess and it needs stripped back and rebuilt properly.
Improvement doesn’t equal a healthy squad
I get why folk lean on the idea that performances can improve with a new voice and a clearer plan. Football works like that sometimes. But even if you accept there’s been progress under Röhl, it still doesn’t change what you see with your own eyes most weeks: too many players look like they’re treading water, and too many positions feel like patch jobs rather than a settled team.
That’s the danger in getting carried away with a decent run or a few positive indicators. You start thinking the core is sound, when really it’s just getting by. And in Scotland, “getting by” is never enough for Rangers for long.
Contracts, loans, and hard decisions
The looming issue is squad turnover that’s coming whether the club likes it or not. Loans go back. Out-of-contract players move on. That’s normal. The problem is what sits behind it: players heading into their last year who, in truth, don’t merit a new deal. If you’re not renewing, you’ve got to sell. If you’re not selling, you’re running down value and storing up another problem for later.
Then there’s the wider group who simply aren’t good enough for where Rangers want to be. Some will need moved on permanently. Others might need a loan just to clear space and wages. Either way, it’s not a one-window tidy-up. It’s a proper clear-out.
Two windows to change the mood
For me, that’s why the talk of a “gigantic overhaul” rings true. Not because we’re being dramatic for the sake of it, but because the current squad balance feels wrong. The next two transfer windows have to be about building a team, not collecting bodies.
And I’m with the view that Röhl won’t be properly content with what he’s working with until well into that process. A manager can coach structure, tempo and habits, but he still needs the right tools. Until Rangers sort the churn, the contracts, and the standard across the pitch, we’ll keep living season to season instead of moving forward.
