Monday wasn’t exactly one you’d frame and hang on the wall, but you take the three points and move on. There’s a stage of a season where it’s not about being pretty, it’s about building a run and keeping your head above water while the squad finds its rhythm.
Winning without the fireworks still matters
To be fair, Rangers have had plenty afternoons and nights over the years where we’ve played nice stuff and still ended up dropping points. So if the performance level isn’t always soaring, but we’re still putting wins on the board, that’s not nothing. It’s the kind of spell that can keep you in touch while a manager gets his ideas properly bedded in.
And it does feel like we’re still dealing with the hangover of older mistakes, from squad building to recruitment. That’s not a sob story, it’s just the reality of Scottish football when you miss too often in the market. You end up needing a manager to squeeze more out of what he’s got, week after week.
Moore and Barron: confidence does funny things
The big positive for me is seeing certain players look like they’ve been given a new set of instructions and a bit of belief. Moore is the obvious one. Whatever you thought of him before, he’s now putting in real yards and showing a level of work-rate that lifts the whole side. That change doesn’t happen by accident.
Same with Barron. He’s looking sharper, more involved, and generally more like a player with authority in his game. It’s not about slapping a made-up price tag on him, it’s more the point that he looks like he belongs at this level when the team around him is functioning.
Tynecastle and January: the next pressure points
If Rangers can go to Tynecastle and scrape a win, it’s massive. Not just because it’s a tough place to go, but because it keeps the pressure on the teams above. That’s when you start to feel a title race in your bones.
January is always tricky, prices go up and options narrow, but you can see what’s needed: a bit more security at the back, and another wide option plus a striker to give us different ways to win games. If the club back Danny sensibly, there’s no reason this season can’t still have a proper story to it.
