To sum it up straight away: that was two different Rangers in one ninety. First half we looked the real deal, second half we barely recognised ourselves. It’s the kind of performance that leaves you livid and worried in equal measure.
Where the wheels came off
We absolutely bossed the opening 45, energy everywhere, midfield two looking dominant and shifting the game. Then the second half arrived and the tempo disappeared. We missed a figure who can calm things down when the opposition push. When pressure came, there wasn’t that steadying presence to temper the panic and see us through the storm.
The penalty and the reaction
The penalty moment was maddening. Butland saved twice and, to be honest, the lack of reaction from our players said everything you needed to know. No scramble, no immediate follow-up, no urgency. Fine margins swing big in title races. Moments like that matter and tonight we didn’t make them count.
League picture and consequences
It’s now six points behind with nine to play and Celtic likely a point above after midweek. Dropping points from winning positions against Motherwell and Celtic, then giving away points to a ten-man Livi, all stacks up. Only Falkirk in the top six have given up more across the last six games — not exactly comforting reading.
We’ve got three fixtures before the split against bottom-half sides, including Falkirk again, and one of those is a team we’ve already dropped points against twice. That’s the reality: we’re starting to rely on others doing us favours rather than controlling our own destiny. It’s an uphill task, but it’s not impossible. Still, truth is we need steadier heads, a plan for the second half of games and more ruthlessness in key moments.
To be fair, the first-half performance showed what we can be. But if we want to be champions, those second-half selves have to disappear — and quickly.
