Barron being out should open a door, and for me it’s the perfect time to see Cameron get a proper run of minutes. Not a token cameo when the game’s already settled, but a real chance to show what he’s about in a meaningful spell. Because the more we hear about him “not doing it in training”, the less it adds up with what we’ve actually seen from him on the pitch.
A terrier’s mentality should translate anywhere
Cameron has always looked like one of those wee terriers. Busy, competitive, the sort of player that doesn’t need coaxed into a tackle or a sprint. You either have that mentality or you don’t, and he’s shown it in matches before. So when the line comes out that he’s not impressing on the training pitch, I can’t help thinking: how? If your baseline is energy and edge, that’s exactly the stuff that usually shows up on a Tuesday morning at Auchenhowie.
Now, maybe it’s not effort they’re questioning. Maybe it’s positioning, decision-making, or the speed of play Danny wants in that role. Fair enough. But it’s hard to judge any of that properly if the lad can’t get on the park when opportunities arise.
Injuries happen, but they can’t be a life sentence
He’s had injuries, and that’s never ideal, especially for a player trying to build momentum. But Rangers have had plenty who’ve been injured, come back, and worked their way into the picture again. If fitness is the concern, say it. If it’s sharpness, manage his minutes. If it’s trust, give him a start when the squad needs legs.
What makes it more confusing is you’ll still see him popping up in the training videos. That doesn’t prove he’s ready, but it does keep the question hanging in the air: is he genuinely miles off it, or is he simply not fancied?
Minutes have to mean something
It also doesn’t help when you’re watching other players pick up minutes and thinking, “What are we getting here?” Assgaard, for instance, can show a few nice touches, but there are times it feels like that’s where it ends. Nice touches are fine. Rangers need more than that in the middle of the pitch. We need purpose, intensity, and a bit of bite when games get scrappy.
And that’s why I keep coming back to Cameron. There’s a player there. Maybe not the finished article, but who is until they’re trusted? If the talk is loans, I get the logic in theory. But you don’t develop Rangers players by never letting them play for Rangers. Especially when the squad is stretched and we’re already looking for solutions.
Danny makes the calls and, to be fair, he’s doing well. That’s not in doubt. But Cameron’s continued exclusion is baffling, and I’d love to see the club back their own and give the lad at least half a chance.
