To be fair, there’s nothing new about fans reacting to poor performances. We all show frustration when things aren’t going right. But when that frustration turns into a persistent, hostile atmosphere aimed at our own players and coaches, it becomes a problem. That’s what I mean by a "toxic" environment — negative behaviour from inside the stadium that chips away at confidence.
Where it feels different now
I was at a Boca game three years ago and it didn’t feel like the Superclasico with River Plate, so perhaps not as extreme. Still, you can see how things have got sharper at times here. There’s more instant commentary, more clips going round, more opinions between games. Social media amplifies every mistake and every poor run, and that creates a louder chorus of negativity before players even step back out.
Why agents and players notice
Agents aren’t blind to the atmosphere their players will walk into. They’ll weigh up the environment their client faces at a new club — the dressing-room vibe, supporter pressure, media scrutiny. If a move to Belgium looks like it gives a steadier platform and a clearer route into the bigger leagues, you can see why many advisors might nudge players that way. It’s not just about money or style; it’s about giving someone the best chance to develop without constant off-pitch noise.
So what can we do?
It’s simple in principle and harder in practice. Back the lads when it matters. Supportive crowds lift performance; hostile ones make players second-guess. We’re allowed to be frustrated — I’m not saying swallow criticism — but there’s a line between pushing for better and making the place miserable to work in. If we want the best young players and returning stars to choose us over other options, creating a stable, encouraging environment helps more than a constant chorus of negativity.
Truth is, clubs don’t exist without supporters. We have power here. Use it wisely. Be demanding, yes, but don’t turn the ground into somewhere players dread. Agents are watching. So are the kids coming through. That’s why the atmosphere matters more than some fans admit.
