We conceded almost as many as Hibs and seven more than Motherwell, so let’s not sugar-coat it: the defence isn’t nailed down and several forwards haven’t done enough. Time for a proper clear-out and smart reinvestment, not sentimental calls.
Defensive doubts — who stays?
There isn’t a defender in that back line I’d call untouchable, apart from Rommens. That doesn’t mean they’re all useless; Fernandes has attributes and glimpses of quality. The problem is consistency and attitude. To be fair, plenty of defenders go through patches, but the moments where Fernandes and Djiga looked too casual were costly. When a pairing starts leaking in the last quarter of the season you can’t ignore it — shape, concentration and leadership were missing.
Sell if the money’s right
If a big offer comes in for anyone who isn’t central to the plan, you take it. That’s football now. We’re not collectors. Sell sensible, buy better. I’d be open to moving someone like Fernandes if the fee reflects the risk and lets us bring in a defender with more physical presence or better organisation. It’s about improving the unit, not preserving names.
Striking options — time for a clearer plan
Chermiti grew into the job but remained ineffectual in too many matches. That’s not a crime — new signings need time — but the bottom line is output. If someone’s barely justified their fee, and an acceptable offer arrives, you take it. Naderi looks like a German lower-league type: tidy but not game-changing, and I don’t see McInnes really fancying him. Miovski hasn’t set the world alight either. If selling those two funds a striker who genuinely complements Shankland and Chermiti, I’m all for it.
What I’d like to see
Less sentiment, more plan. Identify the lads who fit the manager’s shape, keep the ones with clear upside, and be ruthless with the rest. Bring in a central defender who organises and a forward who can link play and finish. That’s how you turn patchy form into proper progress.
