Building the Old Firm Mentality

Celtic’s recent title runs prove a simple point: a strong, self-sustaining mentality can be created and maintained inside a squad. It isn’t about birthplace or badges as much as it is about continuity and the time to let that attitude settle.

Why fans in the squad aren’t essential

People talk as if having players who grew up supporting the club is the only way to create that special edge. Truth is, the core of a team can teach newcomers how to cope with the pressure, the crowd and the Old Firm expectation. You can buy players with the right character and grade them into that environment. It’s the collective behaviour — how they move, press, defend and react — that becomes the club’s identity, not the passport papers in their locker.

Continuity matters more than a headline signing

Our real self-inflicted wound over the years has been the constant churn. Sackings, wholesale clear-outs, big summer overhauls — all of it erases institutional memory. When experienced pros who know how to behave in these games are moved on every season, there’s no spine left to pass on the lessons. The result is repeated learning curves and players who have to discover the pressures from scratch every campaign.

Patience, coaching and the core

So how do we fix it? Start by valuing continuity. Keep a core who understand the demands and let them mentor arrivals. Give the manager time to embed patterns, off-the-ball routines and expectations. Yes, buying supporters can shortcut the process because they already understand the environment, but that’s a cosmetic fix if the underlying structure isn’t stable.

At the end of the day this is about culture more than origins. If we accept that, stop turning over the dressing room every year and have a bit more faith in the process, the mentality will grow — the rest will follow.
