Devlin isn't flashy but he'd be useful

If the Devlin rumour has any legs, it's worth remembering not every signing needs to be headline-grabbing. He looks like a tidy, cheap option to steady the midfield and provide cover off the bench.

There are two ways to look at a player like Devlin. You can sniff and say he isn't the sexy name we all dream of, or you can see him for what he might be: a low-cost, low-risk midfield option who brings solidity and balance when needed. Personally I fall in the second camp. I don't see him as an automatic starter, but as a useful change to bring on when the game is getting scrappy.

Not the star, but handy in the right moments

We often forget how valuable those pragmatic signings are. The lad's reportedly done well as a defensive midfielder in other contexts and, if that's true, he can offer a calming presence when we need to close games out or protect a lead. That's the sort of role where a player coming on can change the shape, add a screen in front of the back four and give our creative players a bit more licence.

Is that glamorous? No. Will the fans sing his name on a Wednesday night? Maybe not. But football is a squad game. Not every player has to be a starter to be an important addition.

Wages, value and squad balance

Free transfers with sensible wage demands are worth a look, especially when there's turnover in midfield. If Devlin comes in on modest terms, he won't hamstring the budget and gives us depth as others move on. We've seen before how so-called unexciting signings like Bomber or Hurlock did the job for the club — they rarely got the headlines but they did the dirty work.

From a squad-management point of view, having a reliable backup DM is sensible. It keeps competition healthy and means we are not left scrambling if form drops or injuries bite.

Would he block our main targets?

Not necessarily. If the board and recruitment have other primary targets, bringing in a pragmatic option doesn't preclude chasing them. Clubs often add depth while still pursuing marquee deals. With talk of a few midfielders moving on, signing someone like Devlin could be complementary rather than obstructive.

At the end of the day it's a rumour and fans will argue. Fine. But it helps to judge these players by role and value rather than flair alone. Sometimes the quietly effective signings are the ones that make a season tick over.
