We’re only a handful of games into the season, but the early picture is worrying. There are genuine doubts up and down the squad — not just one weak link. Some players need time, others look like poor fits, and recruitment is starting to feel like the bigger problem.
Defence still full of question marks
At the back it’s been a mixed bag. The new goalkeeper hasn’t yet convinced everyone he’s an upgrade; that’s a fair discussion to have after only a few outings. Right-back is a concern. Losing that stability at the flank has been more obvious than expected. Sterling’s workload shows — he can’t be the answer to two games a week without drop-off. McCronie’s inclusion surprised plenty of us; who signed him and why are reasonable questions.
Centre-back options haven’t settled things either. Fernandez has had moments that made supporters hold their breath — positional issues and lack of composure at times. Godfrey carries the injury-risk tag in some minds, so relying on him long-term looks risky. Young players need time, but patience has limits when results matter. Rommens at left-back scrapes by for now, but there’s no competition pushing him.
Midfield and wide play — glimpses, not consistency
Midfield has been a patchwork. Raskin has shown he’s useful, busy and effective in a certain role, yet he’s not the creative spark we lack. Devlin gives everything, honest but not the solution to unlock games. The young Serb looks promising and will hopefully come through, while Aasgaard has the technical bits but vanishes for long spells.
Out wide is similar: a Japanese recruit looks like he might add something, Curtis feels like an impact option rather than a nailed-on starter just yet, and Gassama has been frustrating — moments of quality but not the consistency we need to rely on.
Attack and recruitment — the long-term headache
Up front, Chermiti can have bright moments but doesn’t look like a natural prolific striker. Shankland will score if he’s fed properly; service is the big variable. The real worry is recruitment. If the budget per player is capped around the low millions, the scouting and decision-making have to be sharper. We keep being told some signings aren’t "Rangers class" but right now it’s hard to point at a coherent recruitment strategy.
McInnes has made odd selections, sure, but constantly chopping managers isn’t the fix. What we need is clearer recruitment, better defined roles and more competition in key positions. That’s how you turn a patchy start into something respectable before the season settles down.
