Chris Jack’s update has done what these things always do: set supporters’ imaginations racing, then leave you with more questions than answers. The core of the claim is straightforward — initial contact between Rangers and Bologna, awareness of the fees and wages involved, but no imminent deal. Add to that reported interest from England and Italy, Roma mentioned specifically, and you’ve got the usual stew of hope, scepticism and armchair negotiation.

Let’s be clear — none of this is confirmation. Initial contact can mean a lot of things. It might be a simple enquiry, a probe to see if interest exists, or just keeping channels open. The line that a deal is "NOT close" is the bit to hang on to. If true, it tells you this isn’t one of those transfer sagas that’s ready to wrap up in a week.

There are a couple of sensible ways to look at it. First, competition from other leagues changes the dynamic. If English or Italian clubs are sniffing around, that raises the bar Rangers would need to clear — and it’s not just about money. Players weigh up lifestyle, European prospects, long-term ambition and, yes, emotional pulls. Rangers have a unique draw, but it doesn’t guarantee a player will pick Ibrox over a Serie A or English option.

Second, moving pieces matter. For any transfer that isn’t close, you’re talking about sales, wage negotiations, agent work, timing and the player’s own preference. That’s a lot of boxes to tick. The suggestion that the club could be feeding a line is also worth noting — clubs and insiders sometimes float stories to manage expectation or preserve negotiating positions. Could be true. Could be spin. Likely some mix of both.
