One Big Signing or Several Smarter Deals?

To be fair, I get where you're coming from. Splashing out north of £17m on a single player isn't a given when there are names like Dahl and Silas Anderson being talked about at roughly half that price. I'd rather see that kind of money spread across two or three signings who lift the whole squad, not least because improving several areas at once is often the smarter move.

Price tags versus value

There are always headline fees that catch the eye, but price doesn't automatically equal value. A big fee might buy quality, but it also brings risk — form, fit and adaptation to the Scottish game. Meanwhile, two or three solid additions on more modest deals can plug multiple holes, increase competition for places and make the manager's job easier. It's not glamorous, but truth is, balance wins leagues.

Squad balance over marquee signings

Look at what we need across the pitch. Cover for key positions, depth to cope with injuries and a bit of experience mixed with hungry youngsters. Paying a premium for one marquee name might leave gaps elsewhere. You can see why supporters prefer a handful of decent first-team players rather than gambling on one headline signing who might not improve the squad as a whole.

There's also the wage and resale angle to consider. Clubs often forget that a big fee can be followed by big wages, which ties up the wage bill and reduces flexibility. Conversely, modest fees spread across several players usually leave room to reward form, promote youth and plan for long-term sustainability. The beauty of sensible recruitment is that it gives the manager options, not dilemmas.

Keep the debate civil

At the end of the day it's a difference of opinion and that's fine. Some supporters want the drama of a big transfer; others favour steady, sensible recruitment. I'm firmly in the latter camp — and yes, hark at me, the always calm and reasonable one — but I'm not calling anyone daft for wanting the marquee. We should be arguing about how to get the best for the club, not getting irate at each other.

If the board and recruitment team can find value in the market without breaking the bank, that's the outcome most of us can live with. Spend wisely, strengthen broadly, and let the football do the talking.
