If what you've been told is accurate, this is about clarity. McInnes has apparently separated a few players into two camps: those who've been told they have no future, and three who have been given a short window to show they deserve to stay. There's nothing fancy here — no mind games. It's a simple test and the message sounds pretty direct.

Clear message from the manager

To be fair, managers who are blunt make life easier for everyone. If you've worked with McInnes before, you know he tends to be straightforward about expectations. That means the players getting time to prove themselves will know exactly what needs to change — attitude, sharpness, consistency or whatever the coach has asked for. There's little room for ambiguity: perform, or you won't be part of the plans.

No real downside to giving chances

There's also the practical side. From what I'm told, these three aren't on massive wages and wouldn't demand big fees if moved on. So giving them a period to show what they've got is low risk. If it works out, we keep useful squad members. If not, the club can move on without huge financial pain. Personally I reckon the squad would be a bit stronger with all three around, even if none of them are nailed-on starters right now.

Players will look elsewhere — and that's natural

Of course the ones who have been pencilled out will be exploring options. You can't blame them. If the message is blunt and time-limited, prudent players and agents will make contingency plans. The line 'they step up or they move on' sounds harsh, but it's the truth of the situation. As supporters, you can respect the clarity. Back the lads given a chance, see what they produce, and accept that some will leave. That's how squads evolve.

At the end of the day this feels like decisive management rather than posturing. We want competition and a group who buys into what the boss asks for. Give the three their chance — then judge them on what they do with it.
