We don't score enough goals as a team and that's been painfully obvious for a while. It's not just one player or one bad run — it feels structural. Celtic get regular contributions from midfield and from wide areas, and that sort of spread of goals is what wins titles. To be blunt: we need more players who actually add goals to the team, not just occupy space.
Midfield and wide threat is missing
Look at the difference when a midfield arrives late in the box or when wingers cut inside with a goal threat. That's something we've lacked. Over the last few seasons there have been very few Rangers midfielders or wide men who consistently chipped in with goals. You can point to Cerny, Arfield and Aribo at times, but it's not been a reliable, ongoing stream of goals from those areas. That lack of alternatives puts a huge burden on the forwards.
Our front two don’t complement each other
The two big boys up front don't link the way classic Rangers pairings used to. The comparison with McCoist and Hateley or Prso and Novo isn't fanciful — those partnerships had balance, movement and an instinct for goals. At times Chermiti looks useful when teams open up, but against packed defences his limitations show. Movement, aggression for second balls and clinical finishing matter. Moore has been our most consistent attacking threat, but you can't rely on one man every week.
What has to happen this summer
We need recruitment that addresses instincts as much as profiles. Two strikers who complement each other — one who can occupy and hold, another who moves and finishes — would be ideal. Add two wide players who score and a creative midfielder who arrives in the box and links play. Dessers did score regularly in his time here according to the figures mentioned, even if he wasn't everyone's favourite, which shows the value of a proven finisher.
Rohl's summer wishlist should be simple and brutal: bring in players who score goals and add genuine threat from different areas of the pitch. Get that right and everything else becomes easier.
