It's About Interpretation, Not Bias

There’s a habit among supporters to reach for the biggest label when a decision goes against us. Calling something "the worst ever" doesn’t just criticise a single call, it questions the referee’s whole competency. That’s a big claim and, to be fair, it’s not what I see in most of these rows. More often it boils down to interpretation, different camera angles and the tiny, human split-second choices officials have to make.

Interpretation beats conspiracy

I’m not defending every call, but we should be careful about leaping straight to accusations of bias. Saying a ref is incapable suggests they can’t apply the laws of the game or that outside pressure influenced them. That’s a serious allegation. In reality, bodies like the KMI can split on an incident — the KMI majority in this case was 2-1 — which tells you it isn’t black and white. It’s down to how people interpret the same footage.

Why footage matters — and why it won’t settle everything

Fans point to different clips all the time. There’s a head-on clip on Sky that some reckon shows contact with the hand and a side-on angle that looks like the hand and head move together. You can watch those and come to your own conclusion. The key question then becomes: was the hand in a natural position? That’s exactly where interpretation comes in. Two people can watch the same frame and disagree honestly about intent, volume of contact or whether the position was avoidable.

Double standards — we see them every week

One thing that gets me is how the crowd reacts depending on which team benefits. The same sort of decision that’s ‘clear as day’ when it goes our way is suddenly dubious when it doesn’t. That’s human too. These debates are useful — they keep referees and VAR under pressure to be consistent — but let’s keep them rooted in what can actually be judged from the footage rather than grand claims about corruption or incompetence.

At the end of the day I enjoy the arguments. They show how much we care. Just don’t assume the referee is broken because you don’t like a call; sometimes it’s just interpretation, and that’s football for you.
