Let folk dabble in the rumour

A bit of excitement over a rumour isn't the end of the world. We don't need constant doom-mongering every time a name pops up — let people enjoy the possibility and remember we've had windows full of sagas before.

Can't we let a rumour breathe for a while? A few of us want a wee bit of excitement and that doesn't make us gullible. There will always be the doom‑sayers — the 'dementors' — piling into every thread to insist Ferguson isn't coming or that nothing's happening at board level. To be fair, scepticism is sensible. Constant negativity just grates, though.

Let folk enjoy the possibility

There's nothing wrong with having a bit of optimism. If someone passes on a WhatsApp rumour after hearing comments from the usual sources, let them float it. Most of us aren't treating it as gospel. We're chatting, taking the mickey out of each other, and hoping for good news. That doesn't mean we're daft or blind to how often these things fizzle out.

At the same time, don't shut people down with the sudden certainty that 'it's not happening' — especially when that certainty often comes from the same handful of posters who've been wrong before. Fans love a bit of conjecture; it's part of the game.

We've seen these sagas before

History tells us to expect drag-out windows. This winter might end up being another saga like January with Hjerto Dahl, or last summer with its own long threads, and earlier windows that had Olsen and others floating about. Names come and go, stories evolve. Sometimes nothing comes of it. Sometimes something does. Either way, drama is part of transfer windows.

Don't shoot the messenger

Some of the heat is aimed at accounts and posters — fair enough when sources are shaky, like the ScotSport account that's had a lot of name changes — but newer posters don't always know the history here. People like Ryan, Slim and Iron might be as right as anyone. Mocking or trying to silence them isn't great. If someone goes 'I told you so' later (WATP included), take it on the chin; ribbing and a laugh is better than constant slagging.

Truth is, let folk dabble in the possibility. Be sceptical, by all means, but don't suck the joy out of every thread. We can disagree without being miserable about it.
