We all see the same names arrive at Ibrox and wonder why some shine and others don’t. You can point at recruitment, coaching or the player himself, and each time there will be a slice of truth. But what nags at me is the idea that mentality — how a player handles pressure and responsibility — is being underplayed. That can’t be fixed overnight, and maybe we’re not giving it the time it needs.
The settling-in question
Look, players arrive with good records. Antman was top assister in Holland, Jaggy was doing bits before he came, so the ability is often there. Yet ability on its own doesn’t guarantee consistency in a different environment. New country, new expectations, new media and a vociferous support — all that weighs on a player. We expect them to flip a switch and immediately deliver. To be fair, that’s not how most people work.
Mentality over ability — but it needs nurture
Someone said DM has hinted at an issue: lads train well but revert under pressure. That’s not an insult, it’s an observation. You wouldn’t put someone who crumbles under stress behind the wheel of a bus, even if they can drive perfectly in quiet conditions. Same logic applies on a football pitch. Pressure isn’t a tap you can turn off. It sits in the head and shows up on big nights, when mistakes are punished and breathing room is minimal.
Leadership drags the rest up
What we need are a handful of players who revel in that pressure and lift those around them. Leaders who organise, who calm, who demand standards. Think of the impact a consistent, composed figure can have — not because they’re miles better technically, but because their presence changes the whole team’s shape and temperament. If we get five or six of those characters through recruitment or development, the rest benefit.
Criticising recruitment or coaches has its place, but let’s not forget the human side. Mental strength is a skill, and it takes time to build. Give the players space to grow it and pair them with proven leaders. It might not be glamorous, but it’s often the difference between signing names and building a team that performs when it matters.
