Dan Neil being announced feels like opening night for the next stage of the window. To be fair, that signing doesn't mean everything else is done — far from it. What I've heard suggests a tidy run of exits and a few more signings to tidy up the squad.

Players likely to move

There are a number of names we've been told are free to find new clubs or have made clear they want a fresh challenge. That list includes both loanees who could go back out and senior players who probably won't be part of Danny's plans. Think Nsiala, Cameron, Cortes, MaCausland, Danilo and Cifuentes among the loaned contingent. Then you have Butland, Raskin, Bajrami, Antman, Dio and Barron as those either told they can leave or looking elsewhere.

What looks close and what's been said

From what I'm hearing, a few of those moves are at the finishing line. Bajrami seems near an announcement, Dio is close, Raskin's deal is almost done and Butland is likely to move on. Antman has interest and Ferguson's transfer is being worked on — both sides want it and we'll pay up, but perhaps not the headline figures you've seen thrown about. I was also told we have an additional central midfielder from Scandinavia lined up, though that's not been confirmed yet.

What I'd still like to see

Ideally the club adds a marquee centre-back and a couple of creative forwards — two CAMs and wide men on both flanks would make sense. To me the encouraging bit is the line about spending wisely and not needing to sell to buy. That gives Danny and Thelwell room to shape the squad without panicking. Exciting times, and you can see why folk are watching every bit of noise from Ibrox closely.
