There’s nothing wrong with questioning a player you watch every week. Raskin has his supporters, sure, but it’s fair to point out the bits that don’t add up. For me the captaincy appearances, the end product and an annoying streak of inconsistency are enough to say he’s not beyond criticism.
Leadership — appearances don’t equal legend
People often put the armband on a pedestal and assume leadership follows. Raskin has captained the side only a handful of times, and that alone doesn’t make someone the outstanding leader some make him out to be. Leadership is about carving out games, organising team-mates and turning up on the big nights. You can see why a few fans feel that if captaincy is so rare, it’s hard to use it as proof of elite leadership.
Numbers, work-rate and the inconsistency problem
The numbers that have been quoted — six goals and twelve assists in his time here — are what they are. For a Belgian international who gets a lot of praise, those returns don’t scream exceptional. If another player had produced similar output, some on the forum might be quicker to point it out. I’m not denying the odd excellent performance, but the pattern of turning in a top showing then fading for a few games is frustrating. By contrast, supporters point to players like Barron and argue he covers more ground and brings constant energy despite fewer minutes.
Standards and what we should demand
Rangers support can be sentimental — we cling to players who are nearly good enough rather than demanding those who dominate week in, week out. That’s human. But if we want the team to improve we should expect consistency and influence. I’m not saying Raskin is useless; I’m saying he’s not untouchable and the club can do better. Back in the day some of our great midfields might have offered a different benchmark, and it’s reasonable to want midfielders who regularly sway games.
Some will dislike the take. Fine. It’s just my opinion and I’d rather see honest critique than uncritical love-ins. Ultimately I want the team to keep moving forward, and that means being honest about where players sit in the pecking order.
