There’s a real fear here that we’re about to pour money into the same pool and expect a different result. To be fair, bringing in Scottish or SPL players has its merits, but if every transfer window becomes a replay of familiar names and linked rumours, we’re boxed in. I can’t accept Dahl and Andersen being pitched as our only Scandinavian options — it feels like the scouting net isn’t wide enough.

Where recruitment is falling short

The point isn’t nationality, it’s balance and ambition. You can sign a dozen players from the same league and still end up short in the places that matter. We’ve repeatedly seen crowded areas of the pitch while other roles are left to be patched up. That’s not planning, it’s guesswork. If the recruitment team are focussed primarily on England or on the same familiar markets, we’re missing out on different profiles that could actually improve the squad.

Goals, creativity and the right-wing drought

We haven’t had a genuine goal-scoring midfielder for a long time. Hagi gave us creativity but when he was unavailable we hardly replaced that threat. Sakala was the last proper right-wing scorer we had — and we’ve been praying for numbers from wide areas ever since. You can coach shape and pressing, but somebody still needs to finish moves. The recruitment focus should be: who adds goals and who brings consistent creativity, not just who’s available.

Stability matters more than quick fixes

Finally, building a team takes time. Other than Gerrard, we haven’t really had a manager see out a full season and stamp a project on the squad. You can’t expect coherence if the personnel and ideas keep changing year to year. What we need is smarter scouting, a willingness to look beyond the usual markets, and patience to let a manager shape a side properly. That’s how you turn spending into trophies, not just another transfer merry-go-round.
