Utter nonsense. If you step back and look at the numbers and the squad picture, it’s hard to make the case that Rangers are dumping assets for fun. There’s a clear, sensible pattern here rather than a panic sell-off.
Where the spending really went
We had six players out on loan last season and those weren’t free moves — loan fees were involved, and MM’s loan fee has been rumoured at around £2m. You only have to recall the transfer ledger to see the scale: the club spent roughly £38.75m in transfer fees last season, while bringing in about £25–26m from sales. That’s not some fire‑sale balance sheet, it’s investment with a plan.
Squad size and real priorities
Right now we’ve got 29 senior players, not counting youth. That’s a big squad and the club aren’t going to stockpile players to calm supporters’ nerves — they’ll add where we’re genuinely light. Left‑back is obvious: aside from Rommens it’s youth or nothing. Centre‑back is another area where we’re thin. Everywhere else there are two players per position until movement happens.
Sell smart, buy smart
If anyone thinks this is asset stripping, explain why Chermiti and Fernandes would still be here. The sensible move is to sell when a player is at peak value — Raskin looks like a candidate for that this window. The awkward truth is that the players we’re willing to move on aren’t always the exact targets other clubs want, so it becomes a domino. That takes time. If missing out on a target is the price of doing business sensibly, then so be it. The alternative — hurried signings and a bloated squad — does nobody any favours.
To be fair, fans want reinforcements. You can see why. But patience and structure beat panic every time. The club seem to be working to that principle rather than simply spending for appearance’s sake.
