We all want that big headline signing. Trouble is, one marquee name doesn't automatically lift a squad. Put simply: I'd rather see £17–20m used to bring in three or four players who start, add real quality and have the right temperament to get the best out of our lads.
Why one marquee signing isn't enough
Big-money arrivals grab attention, and you can understand the appeal. But football is a squad game. One player won't fix weaknesses up and down the pitch or cover for injuries and suspensions. Spreading funds across several areas gives Danny options, competition for places and better balance. It's not glamorous, but balance and depth are what will grind results over a long campaign.
Match fitness and leadership matter
There's no substitute for players who can step straight in and affect a game. You can see why Godfrey's recent regular minutes in the Superliga make people value him — match rhythm matters. Equally, leadership on the pitch is priceless. Players who have worn the armband, captained clubs at a young age or shown they can drive a side on are worth chasing. Those characters lift others; they set standards that rub off on the Gers boys.
How to spend wisely
Look for hungry, proven pros who fill specific needs rather than a headline signing who may not fit the system. Target a mix of experience and youth, players with the right mentality, and those who'll start regularly. Three or four sensible additions will change the team's shape, tempo and mentality far more than one flashy arrival. In short: build the foundations, but buy better quality bricks — and don't forget the glue that keeps them together.
To be fair, there's room for debate. But if we're serious about challenging week in, week out, smart recruitment that improves the entire squad makes more sense than chasing one big name.
