Let's be blunt: we can improve without panicking or throwing big fees at every name that pops up. Ferguson might be having a good spell, but if we're talking north of £10m you can see the logic in walking away. Better value often comes from four or five smarter additions or by trusting the young players we've already got coming through.

To be fair, form is form and everyone likes a confident striker. But paying big for perceived potential is risky business — especially when we've seen players struggle after big moves. There's merit in using money where it buys depth and balance, not just headline signings. If five domestic players give us more quality across the pitch for the same outlay, that's the smarter route. Squad depth wins long campaigns, not just one star name.

Give Rice and Curtis a proper crack

I'm with the folk who say we should hand youngsters real opportunities. Give Rice and Curtis a proper chance to show what they can do. If they impress, brilliant. If they don't, we haven't lost anything trophy-wise compared with this season. You need time to bed young players in. They can bring energy, unpredictability and value down the line — and we can always supplement with experienced pros where needed.

Defence, captaincy and the midfield gap

Butland as captain? Makes sense. He looks settled and he's a voice any defence would benefit from. Manny also needs another top centre-back next to Souttar and a couple of reliable backups — that's non-negotiable. And yes, involve Sterling in some way if it's feasible, but don't make him the only answer.

Midfield has been functional for a while, but the missing piece is a genuine attacking central midfielder to drive us forward and link play. One high-quality creative player in midfield would ease a lot of pressure elsewhere and let the rest of the squad settle into their roles.

At the end of the day this is about balance. Spend wisely. Back the kids where it makes sense. Strengthen the spine — keeper, centre-back, and a real ACM — and the rest tends to sort itself out.
