Can't shake the feeling we're not a whole lot better off than last season. A couple of arrivals, sure, but the same holes are sitting there and some choices make me raise an eyebrow.

Why Aarons and McCrorie divide opinions

To be fair, Aarons divides opinion for a reason. Plenty would take him, some wouldn't. Personally I never wanted him near us. McCrorie feels like a straight upgrade on Sterling to me — mainly because of the injury record people keep pointing to and the inconsistency that comes with it. That said, playing in the Championship isn’t an automatic disqualification for Scottish football; it’s not a neat box you stick a player into, but you do want reliability and a fit squad player.

Centre-backs: Godfrey or Djiga?

Is Godfrey better than Djiga? Jury's out. Godfrey hasn’t played more than 30 games in a season for the last five years, and hanging our hat on that availability is a worry. Djiga, on the other hand, improved massively under Rohl and is still young — you can see why some fans prefer to back his development. It feels like we need a bit more certainty at the back rather than hope.

Shankland, midfield and the recruitment headache

Shankland turns 31 in August. He’s been good for us but you don’t need me to say the clock’s ticking; he’ll need replacing in a season or two and the fact he missed time last season is a reminder. The bigger worry is the middle of the park. I don’t think we’re better placed than last year. The window’s open, but we still lack players in key areas and I’m not convinced we’re prioritising correctly.

Neil could be a very useful signing — but is he here as a six or an eight? I’d rather he’s an eight. We need forward-thinking midfielders, not just numbers. If Dahl comes in, he might offer that, but one player won’t fix everything. Truth is, we need more smart additions and a clearer plan to plug obvious gaps.

Overall: promising bits, but not enough to relax. Bring in like-for-like where needed, and focus on creative midfield energy and dependable centre-backs. That should be the priority for the rest of the window.
