I renovated the house five years ago to try and get ahead of rising costs, only to be paying almost three times what we did back then for energy. I bought an electric car 18 months ago thinking it would help, but with extra costs like road tax coming in it hasn't felt like the financial win we'd hoped for. Add a 6.5% council tax rise this year and it all stacks up. To be fair, it's exhausting keeping on top of it all.
There are two sides to this. On one hand you do the sensible things — insulation, new boiler, greener car — and it still feels like the bills are winning. On the other hand you see people who genuinely don't have the margin we do, and that sticks with you. Feeding five of us is north of £200 a week now. I'm grateful I can manage it, but you can't help thinking of the families who can't. So I try to do a little: buy an extra few items at the supermarket and drop them in the food bank bin. It's not much, but it's something.
Then there's the dream. I've wanted to go to a World Cup for years and finally booked four tickets for the Haiti game — four nights away with the kids. The cost was extortionate and, honestly, I'm not going to post what I paid for tickets. You should be buzzing about that kind of trip, but instead I'm cross and stressed about the hit to the household finances. Will I enjoy it? Right now I'm not sure. The excitement's been crowded out by anxiety about what the outlay means for monthly bills and having to tighten belts elsewhere.
It's a familiar feeling to a lot of us — small comforts and big sacrifices. You want to give the kids experiences, but the price of doing so can leave you wondering if it was the right call. I'm hopeful it'll be brilliant once we're there, and we can enjoy it properly, but that doesn't take away how annoyed I am now. If you've been in the same boat, you're not alone. Put it on Rangers News Views and you'll find plenty with similar stories. And as for the trip — we'll just have to make sure it's worth every penny. We better win.
