After last night I left the ground with a simple thought: signing another defensive midfielder would be the wrong move. We aren’t crying out for extra protection; we need players who can make things happen higher up the pitch and give our forwards proper service.
Why another number six feels wrong
To be fair, a holding midfielder has its place. Someone tidy, who can screen the back four and recycle possession is useful. But piling more of the same into the squad without boosting creativity just makes us predictable. When you’ve got forwards who want service — and that includes Chermiti and Shankland — what matters is tempo, forward passes and players who can unlock a packed defence.
Where the real gaps are
Look at the shape on the pitch. We need genuine number eights who can drive into the box, and a proper number ten who can pick out forwards and open up space. Two wide players of serious quality are essential; without decent wingers the centre-forwards won’t get the chances they need. At the back, a second centre-back to sit alongside Diawara and a fullback who can cover both sides would tidy things up.
I get the numbers fans throw about — Dahl mentioned as a priority and price tags being bandied around — but the principle is what matters. Spend where it actually improves the team’s attacking balance, not just the depth of holding options.
How spending should be prioritised
We haven’t splashed out massively yet, so sensible investment makes sense. If the club is serious about challenging on all fronts then the focus should be two wingers of real quality, an attacking midfielder who can unlock defences and one more centre-back plus a versatile fullback. Sales can help fund that. Is £30 million too much to ask? Depends how shrewd the recruitment is. Quality over quantity should be the mantra.
The truth is simple: sign players who add different ingredients to the squad rather than more of the same. Get that right and the rest — results, goals, momentum — will follow.
