There’s a real buzz about the place. I’ve been hearing plenty of names and, if even some of it turns up, we’re looking at a noticeably different squad come the opening whistle.

What people are saying

On the grapevine I’ve heard Watt flagged as a live target. Other names cropping up on my end are Penrice, Skoglund, Widdell, Just and Cammy. That’s not me claiming any deals — just repeating what’s been going round. It’s the kind of chatter you expect in a busy window and it’s proper exciting to hear.

Why it matters

Whatever the truth of each individual link, the overall picture is what gets you going. We look to be trying to reshape the squad rather than tinker. That suggests more competition for places, different options for a manager and a bit of fresh energy throughout the team. You can see why folk are hopeful.

Expectations and nerves

To be fair, fingers crossed and all that, but I’m expecting more movement before the window shuts. The big question is how quickly new arrivals will settle and where they’ll fit into the spine of the side. Will they bring pace, physicality or technical quality? That’s for the detail men to work out — for us it’s just exciting to think about the possibilities.

Honestly, I can’t wait for kick-off. There’s a sense we’ve actually been trying to give ourselves a team to be reckoned with and that’s a pleasant change from standing still. Whether every rumour pans out or not, the momentum around the club feels positive and that’s something to enjoy going into the season.

Bring it on — I’ll be watching with interest to see who turns up and how quickly they make an impact.
