To be fair, I get why people wave Dessers' goal tally around. Numbers are neat and make headlines. Trouble is, they don’t always tell the full story. A lot of those finishes came in games that were already wrapped up, which makes you wonder how much of it was genuine match-winning output and how much was just stat padding.
Chance creation matters
It’s not just about the bloke on the scoresheet. Dessers benefited from teammates creating plenty of opportunities for him. You can see the difference when a striker is fed clean chances week after week; it boosts the raw numbers even if the player isn’t dragging the team through rough spells. That’s why the context is crucial. If the supply dries up, the appearance of that striker being prolific can disappear overnight.
Where that leaves Chermiti and the squad
We’ve been a bit ropey for large parts of the season and only started to look more coherent up front recently. Chermiti is younger and still learning his craft — that’s obvious and not a criticism, just reality. He hasn’t had the same consistent service as Dessers did, so judging them on raw tallies alone feels unfair. You can see the potential in his movement and willingness to work, but he’s not at the same stage yet.
Sell or keep?
If a genuine buyer turns up in the summer and we can make a profit on Chermiti, I’d be inclined to sell. Transfers are business as well as football. We need players who first-team coaches trust to make a difference when the game’s tight, not just pad stats in dead rubbers. That doesn’t mean Chermiti can’t become that player, but right now, pragmatism should win out.
At the end of the day, let’s look beyond the headlines. Context, supply lines, and the team’s shape matter more than a headline goal total.
